Brood XIX Blues

Still a little sore that I’ve missed out on the gigantic cicada invasion known as Brood XIX, but not so sore that I can’t share some wonderful cicada-themed artwork by Nashville-based Anderson Design Group. I love the combinations of entomology … Continue reading

Wesley Fleming

A lovely discovery of Pennsylvania glass artist Wesley Fleming‘s incredible insects. Many of his creations are species-specific, and though there are plenty of beetles and damselflies, he’s not shy about celebrating the leggy beauty of phasmids, spiders and centipedes.

Time out for Chewing Lice!

Several plates from “Das Buch Der Welt”, an 1845 tome by Carl Hofmann. The context-free plates were found here, along with other pretty butterflies and beetles. I am of course fondest of the plate depicting several Mallophaga, or chewing lice.  … Continue reading

The swarming paper of Kristi Malakoff

Swarms, whether fish, foul, or flies, are a constant source of wonder and fascination for humans, as well as a frustration. We lack lateral lines or instinctive reactions, and  so our attempts to swarm usually result in chaotic crowds and … Continue reading

Random search of comics blog turned up this image from fantasy artist Catherine Jeffery Jones, who passed away last week. It’s not every day you see a ‘Frazetta’ girl ride a tabanid horse fly! Catherine Jeffery Jones was a transgendered … Continue reading
